Karen Lanoue-LambrechtKaren Lanoue-Lambrecht is the head instructor and owner of PAWS-itively Obedient. Karen graduated from Becker Junior College in 1976, where she received an Associate of Science degree in the Veterinary Assistant Program. She was a veterinary technician at Angell Memorial Hospital for nearly seven years. While there, Karen became interested in dog training, as she had acquired an untrained, 9 month old, American Eskimo pup who had numerous behavior problems. Karen took him to a companion class given by Dr. Amy Marder, an animal behaviorist-veterinarian at Angell Memorial Hospital. Soon after completing the course, Karen asked to monitor the classes to learn more. She became seriously interested in behavior/training and was offered a job as a training assistant for Dr. Marder's classes.

She fueled her interest by attending classes and reading books by other trainers. Karen has received national certification as a professional dog trainer. Karen's philosophy was guided by the positive reinforcement techniques taught by Dr. Ian Dunbar, a noted behaviorist and veterinarian. He started an Association of Pet Dog Trainers in 1993, of which Karen is a current member. Their mission is to build better trainers through education. Karen embraces that mission and believes that, through her instruction, she can build more knowledgeable dog owners.

Karen moved to Marshfield in 1995 and found there was not much of a choice in training classes for owners and their puppies. She started her own business and offered outdoor classes through the Norwell Recreation Department. Karen now offers in-home instruction from 9 weeks of age to adult and conducts puppy kindergarten and level II classes at several locations in Marshfield,Pembroke and Hanover.

Karen's instruction classes are recommended by her satisfied clients, many local veterinarians and the Yankee Golden Retriever Club.

R+ Dog Training

http://www.rplusdogtraining.com/

Why the name R+ you may ask?  At our school, we believe in dog training through science.  Animal Behavior Science that is.  In that scientific school of thought, principles of learning are broken down into four quadrants, denoted as R+, R-, P+ and P- with 'R' standing for 'Reinforcement' and 'P' standing for 'Punishment'.  The '+' means something is added to make either the reinforcement or punishment happen and '-' means something is taken away.

We believe that Positive Reinforcement, or R+, is the best way to train dogs and, with that philosophy in the forefront of our minds, we decided to name our school.  Positive Reinforcement training means that we use rewards as the '+' to reinforce our dogs for good behavior rather than a correction as the '+' to punish our dogs.  Think of it as if you were randomly stopped and given a $100 bill by a police officer for going Under the speed limit rather than a $200 citation ticket for going Over the speed limit, which would you be more likely to do in the future?  We certainly would be going under that limit hoping to receive another $100 to line our pockets (R+) rather than be given a citation (P+) for going over.

The American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior recommends reward based dog training.  The AVSAB is a group of veterinarians and other research professionals who share an interest in animal behavior.  The AVSAB has a number of formal position statements as to why they recommend positive reinforcement and reward based training for dogs of all ages especially puppies and those dogs with behavior problems.  We at R+ highly recommend anyone considering training their dog research both the positive and negative sides of the training approach they are considering, and the AVSAB is a highly qualified resource for such research.

Canine Concepts

South Paws is pleased to be the new home of Dorothy O'Connor's training studio.

Dorothy has a long history of training dogs and has spent a great deal of her professional life working with animal shelters, where many dogs are surrendered because they were not properly trained by their owners.

From her time at the San Francisco ASPCA, where O’Connor was an honors graduate from the Academy for Dog Trainers, to her last job, as a consultant for The Animal Rescue League of Boston, O’Connor has worked to train dogs so that they will not end up in a shelter, looking for a new home.
